Fire truck in deadly crash on way to blaze
- 8/7/2011
Two people are dead after a fire truck crashed into a four-wheel-drive while racing to fight a fire in Darwin on Sunday.
Commander Kym Davies from Darwin Police says the airport fire truck was travelling to a warehouse blaze in the suburb of Berrimah, when it struck the car at an intersection.
"The fire was quite a large fire, and they asked for further assistance from the airport fire service," he said.
"There was a vehicle, an airport fire service vehicle, travelling along Berrimah Road and unfortunately it hit a utility crossing Tiger Brennan Drive."
Four people were in the car.
A female and male died, another person has critical injures and the other has minor injuries.
"At this stage we're unable to ascertain exactly what has happened, it is a tragedy but we're investigating," Commander Davies said.
"We have our major crash investigators, our major crime people, as well as a number of other investigators at the scene."
Road restrictions have been put in place at the scene of the fire, at the Wyuna Cold Store warehouse at East Arm Point.
It caught fire around 7.00am (ACST) and the warehouse was gutted by the blaze.
Up to four businesses were also impacted.
There are no reported injuries from the fire, and police say the source of the blaze is not yet clear.
