Royal Australian Air Force aircraft crashes in Victoria, Australia

  • 5/18/2011

A Royal Australian Airforce (RAAF) flight instructor and his student pilot have ejected from a Pilatus PC-9/A aircraft moments before it crashed near a military base in Sale, Victoria. The incident happened just after 3:00pm on Wednesday 18th May with engine failure as the suspected cause. Both pilots are recovering in hospital.

The Australian Defence Force's entire fleet of PC-9 aircraft have been grounded due to this being the third incident involving the turbo-prop trainers this year. In February, the engine in a training plane caught fire at an RAAF facility in Western Australia and in April, two landing gear doors fell off one of the planes in Victoria.
